Laboratory for Environmental Protection and Occupational Safety

The Laboratory for Environmental Protection and Occupational Safety is an organizational unit of the Mining Institute specialized in testing, measurements, and research in the fields of environmental protection and occupational safety.

The Laboratory performs physical, chemical, and instrumental testing using modern analytical methods and equipment, in accordance with applicable national and international standards. Its activities include field measurements, laboratory analyses, data processing and interpretation, as well as the preparation of expert studies, technical documentation, and reports.

Areas of Activity

The Laboratory performs testing and measurements in the following areas:

  • ambient air quality,
    • emissions of pollutants from stationary sources,
    • surface water quality,
    • environmental and occupational noise,
    • determination of the flammability and explosibility of coal dust,
    • testing of mine gases and landfill gases,
    • assessment of environmental impacts of mining and industrial systems.

Accreditation and Quality Assurance

The Laboratory operates in accordance with the requirements of SRPS ISO/IEC 17025 and SRPS CEN/TS 15675, the latter being a technical specification of SRPS ISO/IEC 17025 for periodic measurements of emissions from stationary sources. The Laboratory continuously improves its quality management system, staff competencies, and analytical methods.

The accredited methods cover testing in the fields of:

  • air quality,
    • emissions,
    • water quality,
    • noise,
    • as well as specific testing required in mining and industrial practice.

Authorisations and Permits

The Laboratory is authorized by the competent ministries and holds permits for:

  • measurement of emissions from stationary sources of pollution, as well as verification of automated measuring systems for continuous emission monitoring in accordance with the requirements of SRPS EN 14181 (AST, QAL2, QAL3),
    • air quality monitoring,
    • measurement of environmental noise levels,
    • surface water quality testing.

Equipment

The Laboratory is equipped with modern laboratory and field equipment for sampling, measurement, and analysis of environmental and occupational parameters.
